As part of IABC’s Member Month in celebration of our 50th anniversary we are pleased to feature one of our newest members & talented student volunteers, Riley Malinowski!

Having studied Communications and Rhetoric at the The University of Winnipeg, Riley is currently specializing in Public Relations & Communication Management (CreComm) at Red River College. Apart from his study and volunteerism with IABC Manitoba he also does professional communications work for his school’s newspaper, The Projector & the Selkirk Steelers Hockey Club, while also side gigging at Walmart!

In what little free time he must have left, he likes to engage in heated internet debates about sports teams like the Winnipeg Jets, Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Dallas Cowboys; listen to music, watch T.V. shows, play video games, read, drink piña coladas, get caught in the rain and write about Disney

When asked, what brought him to IABC Manitoba, he says, “It was my Advertising instructor, Kenton Larsen, who advised me about volunteering with IABC Manitoba, after COVID cancelled my hopes of finding a communications related summer job. I thought it sounded like a wonderful opportunity to learn and network and like they say, the rest is history.”

3 fun facts about him:

  • He used to compete for the Manitoban provincial judo team (from 2013 to 2016) and represented our province at several tournaments across the country. “The highlight of my career was the Western Canada Summer Games that I attended in July 2015 at Wood Buffalo, Alberta.”
  • He spends a lot of time listening to and writing about music — “I’m a huge fan of classic rock/new wave (The Cars, Supertramp, Electric Light Orchestra, just to name a few) and the Winnipeg/Manitoba music scene (The Weakerthans, The Guess Who, a few more).”
  • “I collect pyjama pants.” He estimates he is 30 or so pairs deep!

Regarding his thoughts on getting through the pandemic, Riley says, “Read for pleasure. I’ve got a huge list of books I want to read. Right now, I’m reading The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty. Also, try to learn something new every day. I try to read an academic article or watch a short documentary each day. Lastly, self-care is really important. Take care of yourself.”

Welcome aboard Riley!
