We are looking for a  Associate Manager, External Communications

As Associate Manager, External Communications, you provide strategic counsel and guidance on all media relations activities throughout Canada Life, developing content and executing on a media relations plan you’ve developed in support of the company’s strategic objectives. Reporting to the AVP of Media and Public Affairs, you will develop and execute creative solutions, in collaboration with business units. Leading a small team of communicators, you are responsible for developing and measuring external communications for local and national audiences. Your creativity and experience planning and organizing newsworthy events and activities will be central to your day-to-day activities. You will also drive proactive media outreach, act quickly and efficiently on time-sensitive inbound requests, manage reputational risks, and develop strong working relationships with our key media partners. As an integral member of a high-performing team, your knowledge of public relations and the Canadian business media landscape will help you to execute on campaigns that will enhance our brand and build awareness for one of Canada’s largest insurance companies.

What you will do

  • Lead the development, implementation and measurement of external and earned media communication plans
  • Manage all day-to-day media inquiries and lead the development of strategies to respond
  • Develop written materials including press releases, Q&A, media holding statements and leak strategies as required
  • Define and measure PR effectiveness via tracking and analytics
  • Support crisis communications efforts by tracking and collecting information, creating and disseminating key messages, and responding to the media as needed
  • Provide recommendations and proactive advice, consultation, and assistance to Senior Leadership regarding external risks and opportunities
  • Plan for and lead media training activities for senior executives and subject matter experts. Prepare and coach spokespeople for interviews
  • Forge strong relationships with senior communication leads and subject matter experts to determine media responses are developed and approved in a timely manner
  • Partner with business units, namely Advisory Network, Individual Customer and Brand and Sponsorship, to research, plan for and execute on interesting and newsworthy stories and events
  • Lead integrated, cross company business projects, as required
  • Assess and document project communication needs and goals, identify audiences, and risks
  • Collaborate with other communication team members as necessary to ensure consistent messages, positioning, timing and language for various internal and external audiences
  • Manage projects according to communication plans, production schedules, and budgets

What you will bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, or other related field; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. A combination of education and work experience will also be considered
  • Experience working with media in an external communications role, including planning and executing on proactive earned media placements and events
  • Knowledge of journalism, public relations and general communications principles and practices
  • Strong knowledge of local and regional media contacts and/or a proven ability to develop such relationships quickly
  • Outstanding communication and presentation skills with a demonstrated ability to produce creative and clear written content for a variety of audiences
  • Problem-solving, strategic planning and project management skills
  • Ability to effectively manage and deliver multiple projects in a quality and timely manner, independently and under pressure
  • Strong collaboration and relationship building skills in a hybrid working environment
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and a changing environment
  • Ability to handle sensitive/confidential information appropriately
  • Bilingual English and French would be considered an asset
  • Experience leading a small team is preferred
