The University of Manitoba’s Strategic Marketing and Communications team is hiring a Communications Manager, one of four reporting to the Director, University Communications. The Manager leads three Communications Officers who support UM’s Office of the Provost and Vice-President (Academic). This role focuses on both student and faculty communications, establishing best practices that optimize content for target audiences. The Manager plays a key role in building the university’s internal and external reputation across local, regional, and national levels. We are looking for an experienced communicator and leader who can shift seamlessly from clear, direct crisis communication to inspiring, engaging storytelling.

 

Responsibilities:

– Lead collaboration with communications officers and leaders of partner areas to develop Strategic communications plans aligned with UM’s priorities.

– Support leaders on all matters related to Strategic communications.

– Work closely with assigned area leadership to determine best actions in supporting strategic goals.

– Prepare a wide variety of communications materials, including communications plans, speaking notes and UM Today stories.

– Oversee content development and editing across digital platforms and video content.

– Work with the University Communications team, ensures integration of all marketing communications across portfolios.

– Establish process for tracking and reporting on communications activities of assigned portfolio. – Identify and implement market research strategies to inform communications and measure area success.

– Provide strategic advice to leaders on sensitive communications with impact on key stakeholders.

– Ensure positive and strategic approach to relationship management.

– Monitor workflow, production schedules, and task prioritization to ensure smooth functioning of client relations.

– Contribute leadership-level insights and recommendations related to portfolio needs to institutional SMC and ER leadership.

– Provide leadership and contribute to departmental planning, ensuring alignment with UM strategic goals and special projects.

– Takes on select projects within the team.

– Oversee content development for centrally managed communications platforms (print publications, e-newsletters, digital content, social media, video) related to portfolio and audiences

– Work collaboratively with other managers and functional areas within ER, to ensure effective alignment and prioritization of communications activities based on institutional priorities.

– Ensure best practice strategies and effective project management to ensure projects achieve objectives and are completed on time and on budget.

– Oversee or directly liaise with external service providers where necessary.

– Support UM’s response to crisis situations by offering strategic advice and content creation for the assigned portfolio.

– Developing and maintaining accurate job descriptions, set objectives for unit staff and conduct regular performance evaluations.

– Address disciplinary action when necessary, develop training and development plans for unit staff, and provide ongoing mentorship to staff.

– Recommend staff complement increase and decreases.

– Recommend filling of vacant positions, creation of new positions and the discontinuance of redundant positions.

– Develop job roles and responsibilities as well as qualifications associated with the positions.

– Act as member of selection committee for vacant positions.

– Provide appropriate orientation and training to new staff members.

– Ensure the smooth functioning of the unit.

– Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications:

MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING:

– Undergraduate degree in communications, marketing or other related specialization required.

EXPERIENCE:

– Six years of directly-related communications and client management experience in an integrated marketing communications setting required.

– Leadership and management experience is required.

– A solid understanding of print and digital communications platforms and the ability to leverage in an integrated way to meet identified goals and objectives are required.

– Thorough knowledge of the procedures and techniques in the field of specialization is required. – An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

– Must have exceptional leadership and relationship building skills.

– Must have strong time management skills and the ability to prioritize conflicting demands.

– Strong project management skills are required.

– Must possess a high degree of independence, diplomacy and the ability to work collectively in a fast-paced environment.

– Ability to effectively collaborate and negotiate is required.

– Ability liaise successfully with external partners and senior leaders within the institution is required.

– Ability to motivate and inspire team members is required.

– Ability to manage a broad range of marketing communications projects from concept to completion is required. This includes, but is not limited to: communications strategies, print publications, social media strategies, digital content development, advertising and market research.

– A proven track record in working with all levels of staff, including senior administration, external stakeholders and others is an asset.

– Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
