As part of our referral membership month and in celebration of IABC’s 50th anniversary, we are pleased to showcase one of our longest-standing members, Marjorie Huculak.

Marjorie started her IABC journey over 15 years ago and has since served in several volunteer roles with the Alberta, Manitoba and even Newfoundland and Labrador Chapters. This work led to her becoming the IABC Manitoba Chapter President last year.

Coming with a strong background in communications, her thirst for knowledge and building connections was the biggest motivation for joining IABC. “I joined IABC Calgary while working in Banff National Park and quickly became a volunteer. One of my proudest moments was being on the IABC representative committee while developing the University of Calgary, Continuing Education, Public Relations Management Program,” she says.

In the past few years, she’s paying for her own membership as she sees the benefits coming back in countless ways. Marjorie adds by saying, “IABC has given me the insights, connections and experience to grow my career beyond my job.”

She feels she has gained incredible knowledge and experience through formal courses, written materials and especially through connection with her peers. “Building these sustained connections has been invaluable,” she says.

Through her volunteer work, she refined her skills further, especially in becoming a communications leader and mentor. “As an incoming president, I had a fabulous ‘board buddy who coached me through my quest to hone my leadership skills,” she adds.

Over the years, she also received scholarships and other support to participate in numerous regional to international IABC professional development gatherings, which have been very memorable. “It’s so energizing being with thought leaders and surrounded by a circle of peers, especially the one on one moments. Each time I come back energized and fueled with information that I could use immediately,” says Marjorie.

Here are three fun facts about her that you may not know 😊

  • “I know it’s hard to believe, but I indeed have sky-dived, and I am open to going for it, once again.”
  • “I love being a host and proud to say I have a very diverse network of friends. Nothing is better than bringing my friends and family together and making it a memorable experience, whether through a meal, adventure, conversation or a good laugh!”
  • “I enjoy the outdoors – with comforts – nothing better than a good duvet and an espresso.”
  • “I am happy to return to Manitoba after spending years of my life in Alberta; I am a big fan of water and love Manitoba’s lakes.”

When asked about a fun activity that kept her going during this prevailing pandemic, she says, “I miss travelling! But my kitchen continues to be my ‘place of creation’. By virtue of my diverse IABC network, I have learned some great cooking techniques from India, Jamaica, Sri Lanka, and Nigeria, to name a few.”
