Another year is winding down, and I can’t quite believe it will be 2025 very soon. I remember the comms crisis planning and scrambling that was happening as the world approached Y2K all those years ago — and look how far we have come. The internet is now a staple in our daily work and lives, AI continues to creep in, and we are finding ways to incorporate automation and tech into our work as communicators. The challenge is evergreen — adapt or innovate, or risk being left out. I’d assert that communications advocacy in the face of AI is an essential part of our roles now. While tech can help with parts of our jobs, our jobs are increasingly more human-centric and storytelling focused. Communication is the heart of any story — are we ready to outsource that? I, for one, am not.

As the days get darker earlier now, take time to recharge your battery offline and take stock of all you accomplished this year. I hope this message finds you in good spirits and optimism for the new year! If you started a new job, I hope you experienced wonderful firsts and re-discovered what you love about the world of communications. If you were stretching into an existing role, I hope you had the opportunity to mentor someone new and learn from them as well. If you are job hunting, I hope you are buoyed by the support of your local communications community and are able to join us for some networking at our next event.

Big thanks to our board members who organized a fantastic election night viewing with colleagues from CPRS Manitoba, complete with media coverage by Corus CJOB whose Richard Cloutier joined us onsite at One Great City, and CBC Manitoba who popped in to chat with attendees about their thoughts that evening. The role of communications professionals and media literacy remain top of mind as we look to pursue certification in 2025, and we hope you will join us soon for sessions to learn more.

As we enter this time of recharging, re-evaluating and resolutions, I want to extend an invitation that goes beyond simply being a member: consider joining our esteemed Board of Directors. We are a diverse group from a variety of industries and varying stages of our career journeys. It’s an opportunity to become even more deeply involved in shaping the future of IABC Manitoba and making a lasting impact.

Our board plays a crucial role in guiding the direction of our organization, bringing fresh perspectives, innovative ideas, and valuable expertise to the table. By becoming a board member, you’ll have the chance to contribute your unique skills and insights, helping us to fulfill our mission and serve our community with excellence.
